Please consider supporting SEEDS with your year end giving through The Grove Center for The ARTS
Dear Grove Friends,
Merry Christmas! Two years ago, we scaled back the ministry of The Grove Center for the Arts & Media. So maybe you've wondered, "What's up with The Grove?"
I’m very excited to share what has been happening in our ministry and our vision of ministry leading into 2012.
For the past eight months, our Board of Directors and myself have been praying how to best serve artists in the Church. What has emerged is a very simple plan...
Our mission is to help artists of all kinds in their spiritual growth and creative work. We do this through retreats, gatherings and ministry partnerships.
Moving forward, The Grove is focused on developing relationships and helping artists grow in Christ rather than growing a larger organization. My refrain the past two years has been, small is beautiful… just like our 12 acre lemon and avocado grove.
I am very excited about 2012 and our developing partnerships with these ministries: Worship Mentor Network, Christians in Visual Arts and SEEDS Fine Art Exhibits, a ministry that takes art created by Christians out to public spaces like museums, airports and city centers, hubs of our culture.
How can you help? Please pray for our 2012 ministry. Next, please let us know if you would like to host an evening gathering or if you have access to a vacation home where we could could host a retreat. Our retreats and gatherings will be focused on host homes; not hotels or expensive facilities or large programs. Again, small is beautiful.
Would you consider making a year-end gift to The Grove? Your financial gift will help artists of all disciplines attend our weekend retreats and gatherings as we are underwriting these events. If you’d like to direct your gift to SEEDS Fine Art Exhibits, The Grove has partnered with SEEDS as a supporting organization for their work and will ensure that their work of visual evangelism can continue for another year.
Wishing you and your family a Blessed Christmas,
Joey O’Connor
Executive Director

Through the Eyes of Another
ByBondo Wyszpolski | November 24th, 2010 | No Comments »
“Dark Inheritance” curators Cindi Zech Rhodes and Denise Kufus Weyhrich at the opening reception. Through January 8 at the Palos Verdes Art Center. Photo by Bondo Wyszpolski
Explorations and encounters in South Bay galleries
The primary aim of “Dark Inheritance,” says Barry Krammes of the Biola University Art Gallery, where a version of this show appeared, is to “force the observer to look within and focus on his/her interior state.” And, further, “The curators of ‘Dark Inheritance’ selected the artists and their work specifically because of its spiritual nature, that is, work purposefully exploring the paradoxical, ambiguous, baffling character of human existence.”
Those curators that Krammes mentions, Cindi Zech Rhodes and Denise Kufus Weyhrich, were invited by exhibitions director Scott Canty and the Palos Verdes Art Center to present what seems at first glance like a display of gloomy and morose work. The full title, “Dark Inheritance – purposeful dislocation,” which features 23 artists and 70 pieces – certainly does give that initial impression, and one might even walk into the gallery expecting to find a gothic, Romantic undercurrent.
The show, divided into six small sections – Dualities, The Enemy Within, Brother Against Brother, Change, Healing, and Life’s Journey – reveals probing minds at work. There’s a good versus evil aspect to some of the art, and at times a troubled sensibility that may well be a reflection of the sluggish and even ominous climate in which we live.
I see that we’ve come a long, long way since Adam and Eve frolicked in the Garden of Eden.
Dark Inheritance is on view through January 8 at the Palos Verdes Art Center, 5504 W. Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes. (310) 541-2479 or go to pvartcenter.org.

Succour - Thank you letter
Dear Gracious Supporters of SEEDS Fine Art Exhibits, 2/12/09
It has been a month since we have taken down “Succour –the gift of support and solace” from Crystal Cathedral, and we stand in awe of what God has accomplished. With only one artwork left to deliver and the books nearly closed, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the many who helped make this world-class exhibit possible. Each and every hand was such a blessing.
Our deepest appreciation, thanks and praise to God for each one of you and our particular thanks go to the following groups:
• The 46 Artists whose works came as far away as Vermont and New Jersey, for the many pieces that were created especially for the “Succour” exhibit, and for those who also gave their time and talents to help install and tear down. The extra arms and fresh muscles were so welcome!
• Our Install / Tear Down Team of non-artists who carefully unpacked, placed, hung, dusted, installed and then came back to re-pack, all out of love and respect for the art work and belief in our mission.
• Our Docent Volunteers who made time to give gallery tours during the busy Christmas season and blessed the gallery space by sharing their love art and of Christ with others.
• Our Prayer Team whose prayers blanketed SEEDS each morning, giving us a peace we have never had experienced at this level.
• Crystal Cathedral Fine Arts Committee who offered the Richard Meier Welcoming Center as our finest venue to date, and even brought food for our Artists’ Reception. Your encouragement and support was vital.
• Crystal Cathedral Facilities Staff whose professional assistance was invaluable to the installation, helpful throughout the exhibit and finally instrumental on take down day. We couldn’t have managed without you!
• St. John’s Contemporary Worship Team generously provided worship music and entertainment to draw visitors to the gallery space on every busy night and weekend during the months of The Glory of Christmas pageant. Their talents and skills brought fullness to experiencing the arts created and given to the glory of God.
• Crystal Cathedral “Red Coats”, Welcoming Center staff and volunteers who, day or night, welcomed and directed visitors with a smile that was always helpful and kind.
• The Ministry of Evangelism at St. John’s Lutheran Church who gives us a place to call “home”, the volunteers who help with clerical tasks and hospitality at the receptions, fielding the donations and legal documents, and for the prayers. Our ability to continue SEEDS Fine Art Exhibits for 18 showings of 13 individual exhibits in the past 5 years could not have happened without St John’s Lutheran Church staff and volunteers.
• Financial Supporters: For the first time this exhibit we requested a donation from the artists of $40 to help defray some of the costs associated with a project of this magnitude. This did help us tremendously. Also, unexpectedly, those that gave far above and beyond overwhelmingly blessed us. With such generosity, we were able to support a few artists truly in need.
Thank you all so much for making this possible.
Hear are the final statistics for

We stand in awe at what our gracious Savior can do with just a couple of gals and many, many hands and hearts that are attuned to His will - allowing seeds to spread worldwide to turn hearts toward Christ through the fine arts.
You have truly been our “Succour- a gift of support and solace”!

Support and Solace for Christmas, the New Year and Beyond By Thea Gavin
Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008: two days after Thanksgiving. A turkey/stuffing/apple-pie-hangover lingered. Christmas loomed. I didn't know it, but I needed . . . “Succour—the gift of support and solace.”
Not the name of a digestion aid or personal shopper, “Succour” is a SEEDS Fine Art Exhibit—a beacon of beauty and encouragement for the holiday-harried. Images from this exhibit blessed me on my gala-grand-opening-night visit to the gallery, and I hope they stay with me into the unnerving New Year.
On my first quick tour through the art show on the second floor of the Crystal Cathedral's Welcoming Center, I tried to take it all in as a whole: shimmering paintings large and small, several eye-grabbing 3-D assemblages, and a couple of canvasses that seemed to be covered with . . . paw prints?
Artist Tommy Hollenstein became a paraplegic after a mountain biking accident in the 1980's. With the help of his service dog, he now creates paintings such as “Hiley,” where paw prints become vibrant spring flowers as the artist is reminded of how God makes “all things new.” Seeing Mr. Hollenstein—service dog at his side—rolling around the gallery on that opening night gave me much-needed perspective to view the stress and busy-ness of the holidays in a new light. It's God's holiday. He can make it (He HAS made it!) a time of blessing without so much fussing and fuming on my part.
On the other side of the gallery stood “Of Calamities,” a chaotic-looking piece of three-dimensional art that turned my thoughts in other directions—like, what on earth was this mess?
The rusty-looking sculpture, about the size of a big crock pot, seems to once have=2 0been a tiny carousel that was now smashed and jumbled, full of tipped-over and tilting miniature animals and packed with other debris. “Of Calamities” demanded my attention. What was happening here? In his artist's statement, Barry Krammes mentions how this piece tries to “capture the feeling of being on unstable ground, that no material thing lasts.”
Not the most shiny-happy-Hallmark of sentiments, but the truth. God's word makes it plain that this world is sin-sullied. Fleeting. Chaos contained in art can help us contemplate this. And, in the contemplating, we remember what is eternal: God's love in Christ. This is another needful reminder for me as one year ends and another begins.
From spring flowers to calamities—one of the things I appreciate about “Succour” is the lively variety of subjects and sentiments portrayed by the dozens of artists in the exhibit. Life (and the gallery) are full of occasions where solace is needed—incarceration, interior demons, sickness, injury, storms—but there is one picture that, for me, serves as the over-arching emblem of where the best kind of succour is to be found: “The Empty Tomb” by Lalo Garcia. A strong shaft of light splits the tomb—and painting—as an angel communicates the good news to the women early Easter morning: CHe is not here, He is risen.”
And standing there on the last Saturday in November 2008, in front of “The Empty Tomb,” I was taken back to my children's years at St. John's Elementary School and their enthusiastic renditions of the classic song, “Every Morning Is Easter Morning From Now On.”
Facing Christmas, facing the New Year, this was the resurrection “succour” I found at the art gallery that night. The exhibit runs until Jan. 9—I hope you get a chance to find it too.
